Message notes

When You Worship… - April 7, 2019

Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms on earth and their power. The devil said to him, “I will give all this to you, if you will bow down and worship me.”  Jesus answered, “Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

-Matthew 4:8-10

True worship is a focus on God - Who He is, what He's and what He's doing or done

True worship has nothing to do with me or how I feel, rather everything to do with God.

“The most important command,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

-Mark 12:29-31

Act like people with good sense and not like fools. These are evil times, so make every minute count. Don’t be stupid. Instead, find out what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t destroy yourself by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life. When you meet together, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as you praise the Lord with all your heart.  Always use the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to thank God the Father for everything.

-Ephesians 5:15-20

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

-Romans 12:1-2

Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

-Luke 9:23

Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”

-John 4:21-26

Some Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, get your disciples under control!” But he said, “If they kept quiet, the stones would do it for them, shouting praise.”

-Luke 19:39-40

LIFE APPLICATION
To discuss during the week with your family or Life Group

1. Who or what do I find myself thinking or talking about most often? What's one thing I can start doing more often to acknowledge God's presence in my life?
2. In what ways was your definition of worship expanded in this message?  In what ways can you live that out?
3. What is your next step as a result of this message?
