Message notes

When You Give… - March 17, 2019

Be very careful! When you do good deeds, don’t try to show off. If you do, you won’t get a reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.

-Matthew 6:1-2

When I give the is not as important as the  behind why I give.

Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The only people who will enter the Kingdom are those who do what my Father truly wants. On the day of judgment many will call me their Lord. They will say, “We preached in your name, and in your name we forced out demons and worked many miracles.” But I will tell them clearly, “Get away from me you evil doers. I never really knew you”.

-Matthew 7:21-23

But when you do give or do an act of kindness to someone, do it secretly—figuratively speaking, don’t even let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

-Matthew 6:3

Don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.

-1 Corinthians 4:5

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know that he will reward you.

-Colossians 3:23-24

Your Father in Heaven can see what is done in secret, and he will reward you.

-Matthew 6:4

To discuss during the week with your family or Life Group

1. Give some examples of things that you do that have become second nature to you.

2. Why do you think Jesus said, “When you give” instead of “If you give”?

3. Describe your motivation for giving or serving. Are you like Jesus in this way or more like what He warned about?

4. What is your next step as a result of this message?
